What Is Golden Scalpel?
Golden Scalpel is a publication for two kinds of physicians.
The attending who started asking a question medicine never taught them how to answer — what if work was optional?
And the resident who has not asked it yet. But should.
Not retirement. Not quitting. Not burning it all down.
Work optional. The ability to practice medicine because you choose to — not because you have to. Most physicians never learn this is possible. Many sign contracts in residency that delay it by a decade.
Golden Scalpel exists because both of them deserve better.
Golden Scalpel is written by a practicing surgeon. Trauma. General. Minimally invasive. Bariatrics. Working across multiple states, countries, oceans, and systems.
The Independent Physician Model is the framework. The Five Dials are the map. The ideas are what matter here — not the credentials attached to them.
What Is “The Independent Physician Model?”
The Independent Physician Model (IPM) is a framework that gives physicians the language for what they already know but can’t yet name.
For residents, the IPM starts earlier than you think. The moment you sign your first residency contract — most do it in minutes, without reading it — you have already made your first IPM decision. Golden Scalpel gives you the language before that moment. Not after.
It rejects the false binary — W-2 employment or private practice — and replaces it with a spectrum.
Five dials. Autonomy. Income stability. Flexibility. Community. Sustainability.
Every physician is already living some version of an IPM.
Most just don’t have the language for it yet.
Golden Scalpel gives you the language. And then the map.
